This week, as part of our learning for Black History Month, Year 2 explored the Caribbean and the story of the Empire Windrush. The children began by locating the Caribbean on a map and identifying some of the islands that make up this fascinating region. They then explored the surrounding oceans, developing their geographical knowledge and understanding of the world.
The children also learned about the Empire Windrush and discussed why people travelled from the Caribbean to the UK. They discovered that many people came to Britain in 1948 to help rebuild the country after the Second World War and to take up job opportunities, as Britain needed workers in a range of industries. We discussed the hopes and aspirations people had for a new life, as well as the important contributions the Windrush generation made, and continue to make, to British society.
Through these activities, Year 2 developed their understanding of an important part of British history, while celebrating the rich culture, heritage and lasting legacy of the Caribbean community.
