This week in Year 4, we became rounding experts in maths! We explored what rounding means and learned a fun rhyme to help us remember the rules: “If it’s 4 or less, let it rest; if it’s 5 or more, raise the score!” We used this catchy rhyme to help us decide whether numbers should round up or stay the same, building our confidence as we tackled a range of rounding challenges.
We then put our skills to the test using number lines to round two-digit, three-digit and four-digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. We identified the nearest multiples and carefully considered which values our numbers were closest to. For example, we explored whether 73 was closer to 70 or 80 and explained how we knew. We had lots of opportunities to share our reasoning, practise our skills and develop a deeper understanding of how number lines can help us round numbers accurately!
