Diverse Britain

Find out how we teach Diverse Britain at SJSJ.

Diverse Britain and Fostering Belonging at St John and St James.

Through our school vision, “Love your neighbour as yourself, ” (Matthew 22:39) we want every child to feel safe, valued and loved for who they are. Our curriculum and school culture celebrate the diversity of our community, ensuring that all pupils see themselves reflected in their learning and feel a sense of belonging.

Through inclusive representation, diverse perspectives and the explicit teaching of racism and anti-racism, we challenge traditional narratives and nurture empathy, equality and understanding. We aim to empower our pupils as confident, compassionate global citizens.

Diverse Britain Curriculum

Our Diverse Britain curriculum explores the people, stories and events that have shaped Britain, past and present. It encourages critical thinking, celebrates diverse identities and equips pupils to understand and navigate the world around them.

Taught through three modules across the academic year, the curriculum is underpinned by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

1. British Role Models

Through the stories of inspirational British figures, pupils explore resilience, achievement and ambition, broadening their horizons and helping them recognise what is possible for themselves.

2. Celebrating the Impact of Immigration in London

Pupils explore the migration stories that have shaped London, including the Windrush generation and the histories of Hackney, Brixton and Peckham. They develop an understanding of migration, cultural identity and the rich diversity of our city.

3. Activism

We empower pupils to recognise their voices and their ability to create change. Through exploring petitions, protests, lobbying, art and literature, children consider social issues that matter to them and how they can take meaningful action.
